Stories and Shields Workshop

Suitable for: Pre School - Key Stage 1

Costs: £5 per pupil

Curriculum Links: Arts & Crafts and History

Students meet a real princess or prince, who will introduce them to the idea of heraldry. They are then given the opportunity to design their own heraldic symbols .They are also treated to a story involving bravery, a quest and, of course, a dragon. Students can then take their wooden shield back to class/home which is supplied as part of this package.

Duration: 45 minute workshop

STORIES & SHIELDS WORKSHOP

Ultimate Kids Tour

Suitable for: Pre School - Key Stage 1

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour is designed to introduce four historical facts about Warwick castle to very young children; attacking the Barbican and Gatehouse, finding our secret door, looking at swords and shields, and finding fossils in the floor. It is fun and highly interactive including allowing the children to safely handle some weapons and is ideal for those schools looking for general castle based activity.

Duration: 30 minute tour

Meet the Monarchy

Suitable for: Key Stage 1 - 2

Curriculum Links: History (with social hierarchy & classification)

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour introduces students to the concept of monarchy and discusses key attributes of a successful or unsuccessful monarch, including respect, ability to lead, and producing a suitable heir. The tour includes case studies on William the Conqueror, Henry VIII and Queen Victoria, but other monarchs are available. Please contact the Schools Officer to discuss specific requirements.

Castle Life

Suitable for: Key Stage 1 & 2

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

Castle Life will explore the social and cultural life in a medieval castle by looking at the roles and tasks carried out by the Castles inhabitants throughout its history. The tour shows comparisons and similarities to modern roles. Such as medicine, cooking, construction and fabrication.

Duration: 30 minute tour

Attack and Defence

Suitable for: Key Stage 1-3

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

Students are introduced to the structures and strategies involved in the defence of Warwick castle through the middle ages. From the construction of the Motte and Bailey through to the 14th Century defences we have today. They will learn the vocabulary of the various defences as well as learning how such defences were used. Pupils will have the opportunity to plan an attack and prepare a defence Of Warwick Castle.

Duration: 30 minute tour

Capacity: Bookable for a maximum of 35 people per 1 hour time slot.

Swords and Shields Workshops

Suitable for: Key Stage 2

Curriculum Links: Design Technology & Art & Design

Costs: £5 per pupil

The students are introduced to a selection of key weapons from the medieval battle field and will find out how these weapons were used and who would carry them. Pupils will take part in drill and marching exercises as performed during the middle ages. The workshop will also give the students the opportunity to learn some basic sword fighting skills. The tour ends with an opportunity to design a uniform based on their favorited warrior. Students can then take their wooden shield back to class/home which is supplied as part of this package.

Power of the Monarchy

Suitable for: Key Stage 2-3

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour uses case studies of key monarchs in English history to demonstrate the roles of the monarchy, and how it has developed and changed over time. It will focus on the social, religious, political and economical reasons for these changes and, where relevant, how this impacted the castle.

Curriculum Links: History and Citizenship

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour will introduce students to the idea of crime and punishment as experienced from the Anglo-Saxon times up to the Victorian period. It will look at the development of laws, and explore methods of punishments given for crimes committed.

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour will inform pupils about the Battle of Hastings, have a focus on the Norman Conquest and specifically William the Conqueror’s role in it and describe the establishment of castles in England.

Execution of a Queen

Immersive Workshop

Suitable for: Key Stage/Age Group: 3-4 (12-16 years)

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £200 per session

This is a short performance narrated by an expert from the castle’s History Team and performed with the participation of actors. It is a dramatic presentation of the rise and downfall of Anne Boleyn. It focuses on the last few days of Anne’s life and her execution. This performance has been written and adapted using original source documents. Following the presentation, the narrator will lead a discussion where the students will have the opportunity question the participants and further explore the subject.

Duration: 1 hour

Capacity: Class of up to 30

Votes for Women

Immersive Workshop

Suitable for: Key Stage/Age Group: 3-4 (12-16 years)

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £200 per session

Votes for Women is a short dramatic presentation narrated by a member of the History Team and performed with the participation of actors. It looks at the Women’s Suffrage movement, featuring key events and people. It has been written and adapted with the help of original source documents. Following the presentation, the narrator will lead a discussion where the students will have the opportunity question the participants and further explore the subject.

Victorian Warwick

Immersive Workshop

Suitable for: Key Stage/Age Group: 3-4 (12-16 years)

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £200 per session

This workshop led by three members of the Warwick acting team will immerse your students in Warwick’s Victorian life. They will learn from our Butler some of the jobs expected of a servant and the rules by which they must live. Having prepared tea for the lady of the house they will meet the 5th Countess Daisy who will lead them on a discovery of how much life has changed at all levels of society since Queen Victoria first ascended to the throne.

Finally your students will be taken to the Mill and engine house where they will experience the noise and spectacle of the industrial revolution with our engineer who, for the first time in many years and exclusively to schools, will help them fire up the massive generators and pumps in order to see how electricity and water was created and distributed around the castle.

This tour traces the castle’s history from its initial construction in 1068 by William the Conqueror. It follows the development of the castle into a powerful medieval fortress, how it became a stately home and finally a tourist attraction. The tour references how different periods of history have influenced such development: the Norman Conquest, the Hundred Years' War, the Wars of the Roses, and the Enlightenment.

Duration: 30 minute tour

Student Ultimate Tour


The Kingmaker

Suitable for: Key Stage 3-4

Curriculum Links: History

Costs: £2.50 per pupil

This tour is designed to give a solid overview of the Wars of the Roses with particular reference to the role played by Warwick the Kingmaker. Pupils will be taught some of the key moments such as the battles of Towton and Barnet, the death of Richard III and the rise of Henry Tudor. They will also be introduced to some important characters, such as Henry VI, Edward IV and Richard Neville.

Duration: 30 minute tour

Kingmaker


Battle Skills

Suitable for: Key Stage 2-3

Curriculum Links: History, Drama / the Art of War, Interactive

Costs: £5 per pupil

Another favourite with schools. Students meet with a medieval recruitment officer who will take them through their paces in medieval drill. They will discuss and see various mediaeval weapons and their use and will learn a number of techniques with swords. At the end students will learn that warfare is not all about glory.

Duration: 45 minute workshop
